Buffalo Bill State Historical Site

Is located in North Platte, NE. Buffalo Bill was one of the most colorful figures of the Old West became the best known spokesman for the New West. He was born William Frederick Cody in Iowa in 1846. At 22, in Kansas, he was rechristened "Buffalo Bill". He had been a trapper, a bullwhacker, a Colorado "Fifty-Niner", Pony Express rider (1860), wagon master, stagecoach driver, Civil War soldier, and even hotel manager. He earned his nickname for his skill while supplying Kansas Pacific Railroad workers with buffalo meat. He was about to embark on a career as one of the most illustrious prairie scouts of the Indian Wars.The house, barn and outbuildings are all the original Buffalo Bill settlement, built in 1887. Camp Duke Alexis

Is located in Hayes Center, NE. Features living history presentations, black powder competitions, traders on site and food is available. Rendezvous is held the last weekend in September.

Champion Mill

Champion Mill is located in Imperial, NE. The last functional water-powered mill in Nebraska, this two-story structure stands as a symbol of the settlement and development of Nebraska and the West. Champion Mill ground flour and grain from 1888-1968, and visitors can still see the mill work in progress as whole grain is brought in and passed along conveyor belts to grinders and sifters, and finally bagged as flour to be used for baking. Visitors can even purchase a souvenir bag for themselves. It allows you to enjoy a day in a senic setting of the historical park and was built in 1886. Champion Mill, the last functional water-powered mill in Nebraska, stands as a symbol of the settlement and development of Nebraska and the West.

Chatauqua Pavillion

Is located in Hastings, NE. Is the only pavillion still remaining in Nebraska that dates back to 1907. It is open year-round from dawn til dusk.

Faling Living History Tour

Is located in Cambridge, NE. Is an architectural masterpiece and is homestead and is on the National Register of History, depicting the cultural heritage of the early Pioneer family. A gallery is available for displays by local artists. Special tours are arranged by appointment. Open Memorial Day- Labor Day.

Fort Kearny Historical Park

Is located in Kearney, NE. Displays a military post which symbolizes the westward expansion by offering refuge to civilians who encountered the dangerous travels of the Oregon Trail.


Fort McPherson National Cemetery

It is located in Maxwell, NE. Built in 1863, Fort McPherson was established to ensure peace along the western frontier between the immigrants traveling along the Oregon Trail and the Native American inhabitants. The troops originally stationed at the post provided military protection from hostile Native Americans during the construction of the railroad. (308) 582-4433 (Pictured on the right)

George Norris Home

Is located in McCook, NE. It is a National Historic Site. This U.S. Senator helped author the Nebraska Constitutional Amendment that established a unicameral legislature in 1935. Norris was acclaimed by the U.S. Senate as the "greatest senator in American history."

George W. Frank House

Is located in Kearney, NE. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was built by George W. Frank in 1889. The house is constructed of red Colorado sandstone, with English oak paneling and furnished with authentic Victorian period pieces, including many of the Frank's original furnishings. Open Tues-Sat. 1-5p.m. Admission $3 : Call 308-865-8284 for more information. The G.W. Frank House is owned and operated by the University of Nebraska at Kearney. It was registered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is located on the West Campus on West Highway 30 in Kearney, Nebraska. Below are some pictures of the House!


Heritage Square

Is located in McCook, NE. This historical walking tour includes the boyhood home of Governor and United States Senator Ben Nelson, a home of U.S. Senator George Norris,Home of Governor Ralph G. Brooks, The Red Willow Courthouse, A very historic YMCA building, the High Plains Museum, a home designed and famed by Frank Lloyd Wright and finally a home of Hon. Frank B. & Maxine Morrison. It is a hisoric tour of McCook that you can walk to from downtown McCook and visit.

Massacre Canyon Mounment

It is located in Trenton, NE.  It is located two miles east of Trenton on U.S. Highway 34. Approximately 50 to 150 Pawnee Indians were massacred at the site on August 5, 1873, by a Sioux war party. A monument commemorating this last battle is located just each of Trenton. Carved in the 35 foot granite monument are the faces of Sioux Indian John Grass and Pawnee Indian Ruling-His-Son.Is dedicated to the last Pawnee-Sioux Indian Battle.

Minden Opera House

It is located in Minden, NE. The Opera House was built in 1891 and featured plays and Monday night dances that drew traveling bands until entertainment events at the facility ceased in the late 1940's. The old building, which was being used by a hardware store, was gutted and transformed into a showplace of wood, brass, murals, and fiber optics. Below is a picture of the opera house murals. These are located within the opera house on the ceiling, they are amost breath taking. The gorgeous paintings change before your eyes. Visit Minden to see the gorgeous Minden Opera House.

Phelps County Courthouse

Located in Holdrege, NE. Features consturction on the building which began in 1910. In 1911 the Beaux Arts-style structure was completed. It still stands there in magnificent form. Plan to see this beautiful building while in Holdrege.

Plumcreek Massacre

It is near Lexington, NE. Is the area where a wagontrain was attacked by Indians on Aug. 8 1864. Nancy Morton and Daniel Marble were taken captive and began a long and violent journey across four states. After six months and several attempts, they were ransomed from the Indians.

Roller Mill

Located in Wauneta, NE. Here in Wauneta is one of the only original flour mills left in the state. It has been around through many generations. It supplys many local stores with a fresh supply of flour.

Starke Round Barn

It is located in Red Cloud, NE. Is Nebraska's largest round barn. It has three levels two which were for the cattle's food and the other was for the cows.
 

Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial

Is located in Red Cloud, NE. Is home of the world famous author, Willa Sibert Cather (1873-1947), who moved with her family from Virginia to Red Cloud.
